Albert Furstnow was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin in 1862. At a young age he worked as a foreman for G. H. and J. S. Collins in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but during the 1880s cattle boom, moved to Miles City, Montana which had become a major center for cowboys, range outfits and horse gear. He opened up his first shop there and one year later bought out the Goettlich Saddlery, then forming a partnership with Charles E Coggshall in 1884 which lasted until March of 1899. Furstnow quickly became known for his exceptionally well-made saddles built to withstand hard use on the Northern Plains, especially popular with working cowboys, rodeo contestants, early trick riders and Wild West show performers. He claims, in his 1916 catalogue, to have originated the swell fork design though others dispute that assertion. Furstnow built one of the largest saddleries in the Northwest fostering a reputation for fine workmanship and materials and carrying a comprehensive line of cowboy goods. He died in 1923 but the shop continued to operate under Joseph Moreno and several other owners until 1982.
