The prolific five Hernandez men who were renowned as bit and spur makers in the San Jose, California area in the 1890s consisted of Joaquin (b. 1841) who was in partnership with Leopold Gomez in 1893; Frank X. Hernandez (b.1850); lonzo Hernandez (b. 1871); Alick M. Hernandez and Marano Hernandez. The later two working in the 1890s. Few pieces of their work were marked but the styles of engraving were similar leading one to conclude that they were made by different members of the same family. Their work can be found in many of the most prominent San Francisco and San Jose saddleries including F.M. Stern and Messing and Son from San Jose as well as the Visalia Stock Saddle Company and L.D. Stone from San Francisco , The few marked examples that do surface are stamped “HERNANDEZ” or with various variations of “XXX” markings on the chap guards.
